The 2026 season is already well underway with key winter projects focused on improving both aesthetics and long-term turf health. Our agronomy team has been actively working on:

  • Bunker renovation projects to enhance drainage, consistency, and playability

As spring progresses into May, we implement our integrated weed and pest management protocols, protecting turf quality while maintaining environmentally responsible practices.

Our new Head Golf Professional, Michael Cattani, has officially started at Sandpines! 

A note from Michael: 

“My name is Michael Cattani and I would like to introduce myself as your new Head Golf Professional here at Sandpines Golf Links. 

I have been a golf professional for about 11 years now, first as an Assistant Pro at Woodhaven CC in the Palm Springs area of Southern California and then the Head Professional and most recently I served as the Head Professional at Ocean Golf Course in Washington state. 

I grew up in the Los Angeles area of California, played professional baseball in the Mariners farm system and am a Veteran of the US Navy. 

I am very excited to have this opportunity for many reasons. One of the biggest is to be able to work with Tara and Andrew. After researching the history of the course and hearing their vision to bring it back to what it was and then to expand on that and make Sandpines a top golf course not only in Oregon but in the country again was inspiring and being able to help them achieve it is going to be very rewarding. 

I look forward to getting to work with our home clubs and leagues along with opening up for instruction once again for adults and juniors.

Cultural Practices: The Foundation of Perfect Greens

Mowing: Precision Cut to 0.130”

At Sandpines, greens are maintained at a height of cut (HOC) of 0.130 inches, delivering that tight, tournament-quality look and performance. We mow at least four times per week, using walk mowers for clean-up and rotating mowing directions to ensure uniformity. Monthly grooming in four directions replaces a mow, further refining the surface.

Rolling: Smoothness You Can Feel

Greens are rolled four times weekly, with direction rotation to avoid grain build-up. Whether using our dedicated roller or combining with mowing, the goal is always the same: fast, true greens that golfers rave about.

Irrigation: Balanced and Strategic

Our irrigation philosophy is simple — light and frequent. We provide just enough water to keep turf healthy without compromising firmness. Supplemental hand watering ensures dry spots are addressed without over-saturating the surface.

Aerification & Topdressing: Building Healthy Soil Structure

Perfect greens don’t happen by accident. We pull cores each April, followed by heavy sand topdressing, and continue venting seasonally (July, October, January) to relieve compaction and improve air exchange. From May to September, we apply light topdressing every 28 days to maintain a firm, smooth playing surface and manage organic matter.

Pin Location Rotation: Consistency & Fairness

Pin placements rotate four times a week — Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday — or after 70 rounds. With nine distinct locations per green, we evenly distribute traffic to minimize wear and enhance playability.

Chemical Applications: Feeding, Protecting, and Enhancing the Turf

Fertility Program: Tailored Nutrition Year-Round

From October to April, greens receive balanced soluble fertilizer every 28 days, keeping growth steady without pushing too hard. During peak growing season (May to September), we increase applications to every 14 days, adding urea and Epsom salt for a lush, deep green color. Ferrous sulfate is used in cooler months to improve turf color naturally.

Fungicide Program: Disease Defense on All Fronts

Our greens are constantly under attack from turf diseases. In the off-season, we apply systemic fungicides to control Microdochium Patch (Snow Mold). During summer, the focus shifts to Anthracnose, with both systemic and contact fungicides applied on alternating 28- and 14-day intervals. We also include wetting agents and Plant Growth Regulators (PGRs) in our sprays for added protection and performance.

Wetting Agents: Water Efficiency Matters

From May through September, wetting agents are applied every 28 days alongside fungicides. These ensure that every drop of water we apply is used efficiently, supporting firm, hydrated, and stress-resistant greens.

Plant Growth Regulators: Smoother Surfaces, Healthier Plants

Our PGR strategy includes:

  • Proxy for Poa annua seedhead suppression — applied twice at full rate in spring, then five light-rate apps through summer.
  • Primo for growth regulation — added with fungicide sprays to inhibit cell elongation, control excessive growth, and promote tighter playing conditions.

Spring 2025: Aerification Update

Spring is in full swing, and with it comes the essential work of golf course aerification—the foundation of healthy turf and high-quality playing conditions. We’re excited to share our 2025 spring aerification progress and timeline so far.

Fairway Aerification Completed March 18th

We kicked off this year’s turf maintenance with fairway aerification, which wrapped up on March 18th. Thanks to cooperative weather, this crucial step was completed on schedule. The fairways have healed beautifully and are now providing excellent playing conditions across the course.

Greens Aerification Completed April 16th

After a short delay due to inclement weather and a team member’s emergency appendectomy (they’re recovering well!), we successfully completed greens aerification on April 16th. The weather during this process was ideal, allowing us to thoroughly fill the aerification holes with sand and achieve excellent surface results.

  • Topdressing sand is currently being brushed in, watered, and mowed regularly.
  • Players can expect healed green surfaces by May 7th.
  • Green #1 is currently the most heavily sanded and will receive final adjustments this week.
  • Green #17 will be lightly topdressed again to ensure uniformity.

Tees & Approaches Aerification Scheduled for April 22–24

The final piece of our spring aerification program is underway this week. Tees and approaches are scheduled for aerification from April 22nd through April 24th. These areas will be topdressed just as heavily as the greens to ensure consistency and long-term turf health.

  • On Thursday, April 24th, play will begin on Hole #10 to allow our team time to complete Holes 1–6 efficiently.
  • We expect tee and approach surfaces to be fully healed by May 14th.

Looking Ahead: Mid-May Course Conditions

We’re pleased with how everything is progressing. By mid-May, all playing surfaces—greens, tees, approaches, and fairways—will be in fantastic condition. Aerification is never the most glamorous aspect of golf course maintenance, but it’s critical to keeping turf healthy and surfaces smooth and playable throughout the season.

As the course superintendent, my role is crucial in maintaining the golf course’s beauty and playability. From sunrise to sunset, here’s a behind-the-scenes look at a typical day managing this stunning coastal golf course.

The early morning hours on the Oregon Coast are serene, and I rise at 4:30 AM to start my day. There’s something magical about the quiet before the golfers arrive, especially at a premier golf course like Sandpines. While most are still sleeping, I’m already getting ready for the day ahead.

5:45 AM – Arrive at the Agronomy Center

By 5:45 AM, I arrive at the Agronomy Center at Sandpines Golf Links, a hub for course operations and maintenance. I take a moment to check the weather forecast and review any updates on G1 (our golf course management software). Keeping track of weather conditions is essential, especially when managing a coastal course that can experience rapid changes in conditions. This helps me plan for irrigation, mowing schedules, and any necessary adjustments for the day.

6:00 AM – Crew Start Time and Morning Meeting

At 6:00 AM, I gather the crew for our morning meeting. Our team is committed to delivering exceptional course conditions, and it’s essential that everyone is aligned on the day’s goals. We discuss the tasks ahead, review the schedule for course prep, and go over any specific issues from the previous day’s play. We go through our goals – both for the day & long term.

6:15 AM – Crew Begins Course Prep, I Check Emails and Review Schedules

By 6:15 AM, the crew begins preparing the course for daily play. This includes mowing greens, setting tee boxes, and raking bunkers, among other essential tasks. Meanwhile, I check my emails, monitor the weather, and review G1 for any special notes regarding the day’s tee times or maintenance requirements. I also review timesheets to ensure everything is on track for our team’s performance.

7:00 AM – Start My Course Prep and Evaluate Crew Work

At 7:00 AM, I dive into my part of the course prep. This includes checking in with the golf shop to discuss any upcoming events or tee time changes. I evaluate the quality of the crew’s work and communicate any adjustments needed. It’s important to monitor progress throughout the day to ensure that Sandpines Golf Links continues to shine as one of the top golf courses on the Oregon Coast. I also review the irrigation results from the previous night to ensure that the course has received adequate water.

10:00 AM – Lunch Break

By 10:00 AM, it’s time for a well-deserved break. I use this time to recharge and reflect on the morning’s work. Managing a golf course, especially a Rees Jones-designed links course, requires constant attention to detail. During lunch, I also keep an eye on my phone for any urgent emails or updates regarding course conditions.

10:30 AM – Assign Work for the Second Half of the Day

After lunch, I begin assigning work opportunities for the second half of the day. This involves reviewing any unfinished tasks from the morning and identifying what’s needed to keep the course in perfect condition. Whether it’s additional turf care, setting up for a tournament, or preparing for evening irrigation, planning ahead is key.

10:45 AM – Crew Starts Second Shift Work

By 10:45 AM, the crew is back at it. They begin their second half of the day’s work, whether it’s fine-tuning the greens or handling additional landscape maintenance. I use this time to check in with the golf shop, monitor the course’s irrigation system, and ensure that the day’s plan is progressing smoothly. This step is essential, as the needs of a coastal golf course can shift rapidly due to the unique climate of the Oregon Coast.

11:30 AM – Course Tour and Irrigation Evaluation

Around 11:30 AM, I take a moment for a full course tour and evaluate the results of the morning’s irrigation. I look for any areas that may need further attention and assess the progress of our crew. At Sandpines, attention to detail is crucial – every blade of grass must be in perfect condition to uphold the standards of this world-class golf course.

2:00 PM – Adjustments and Final Check-ins

By 2:00 PM, I reassess the work plan for the day and make any necessary changes based on the progress of the crew and any unforeseen challenges. I also check my email and review the weather and timesheets once more. Communication with the crew is constant, and as they come in to wash and put away equipment, I make sure they know how much I appreciate their hard work.

2:30 PM – Crew End Time and Irrigation Setup

At 2:30 PM, the crew wraps up their day, and I thank them for their efforts. As superintendent, it’s important to recognize their hard work and dedication to maintaining the high standards of Sandpines Golf Links. Once the team is done, I set up the irrigation system for the night to ensure that the course is adequately hydrated for the following day.

3:00 PM – Lock Up and Head Home

By 3:00 PM, it’s time to lock up the Agronomy Center and head home. As a superintendent, the work never truly ends, but I take pride in knowing that I’ve done my part to ensure that Sandpines Golf Links is ready for another day of golfing excellence on the Oregon Coast.

9:00 PM – Bedtime

After a busy day maintaining one of the best golf courses on the Oregon Coast, I head to bed by 9:00 PM, ready to do it all over again the next day.

Meet The Team: F&B Manager – Brent Holley

We are so excited to introduce our newest Management Team member, Brent Holley! Brent has come on board at Sandpines to give our patrons what they have been waiting for – a 19th Hole to talk through the game with your buddies!

Just a week in, Brent has taken complete charge and is working overtime to make his, ours, and all your dreams come true! We are just so thrilled to have him on board!!!

“Brent Holley has spent over two decades in the food and beverage industry, with experience that

spans from the shores of Kauai to the casinos of Mississippi. His journey began behind the bar at

Club Jetty in Kauai and led him to Memphis, where he built a career working with Fitzgeralds,

Splash, Bally’s, Treasure Bay, and Goldstrike casinos. Along the way, he also spent ten years in the

golf industry as an assistant golf professional, working under respected PGA professionals at

Mallard Point, Cottonwoods, and Olive Branch Country Club.

Most recently, Brent served as bartender lead at Three Rivers Casino from 2018, further

strengthening his connection to the Florence community. A passionate cook and avid golfer, Brent

sees his current role at Sandpines as the perfect opportunity to bring those two worlds together. His

goal is to make the bar and restaurant a year-round destination for both locals and visitors.

Brent and his wife-whom he met while working at Bally’s-have built a beautiful life on the Oregon

coast. They’re proud parents of four grown children and delighted grandparents to four. With deep

Meet The Team: Accounting – Shannon Battraw

Shannon has been an absolute key player (pun intended!) in our operations since new ownership took a stronghold in late 2024 at Sandpines Golf Links. A superhero, there is nothing Shannon can’t do!

A pro at reading the greens, Shannon is incredible at everything she does. Learn a little bit more about Shannon & how she got here:

“I began working when I was 16 years old in Seattle for a men’s necktie/dress sock manufacturing company. During the 15+ years I was there, I had the opportunity to learn all facets of accounting: started off filing; left as Controller. While working there full-time, I earned my BA in Business Administration which took me 10 years to accomplish! I knew I had a passion for balancing books and finding those pennies! Thanks Mom!

I would meet my husband, Robert, in 2005 on an annual family trip to Reno. I was living in Washington, and he was living in Texas. I would uproot and move to Texas, and we would marry in 2007. We left Texas, moved to Washington and then moved back to Texas for his job relocation. Upon his retirement, we shipped our things, filled our vehicles and headed West, driving for four days. We settled in Florence 2019 with our beloved Doberman, Abby.

I’ve always worked in the private sector for manufacturing companies. When an opportunity arose to work at FGL, I would find myself in new territory working directly with the public using a Point-of-Sale system! I would begin at the front desk, checking customers in and meeting amazing people.

Once the new owners purchased the course in November 2024, there was an opportunity for me to once again utilize my accounting skills. I still love interacting with customers, so you will find me behind the counter a few days of the week; in addition to maintaining the daily accounting functions.

For over 30 years now, I have been participating in the same football pool. Luck has been on my side a few times…wink, wink. We are Seahawks fans! I like listening to 70s music and working in my yard. I enjoy having my family visit from Washington and exploring new places with them. I also have had the pleasure of running the ladies Thursday group for a few years now. Robert and I both enjoy playing golf. Over the years, we have met so many wonderful people that have become great friends.

At Florence Golf Links (more commonly known as Sandpines Golf Links), we’re committed to offering the best possible golfing experience, and a key part of that is maintaining our course to the highest standards. One area that has admittedly required attention over the years is our bunkers. Due to the constant forces of rain, wind, and time, these bunkers had been allowed to deteriorate, impacting both the visual appeal and playability of the course. But we’re excited to share that, as of late 2024 with new ownership, our team has been working hard on a comprehensive bunker reconditioning project to bring these features back to life.

The Challenges of Bunker Maintenance on the Oregon Coast

The weather on the Oregon coast, while beautiful, poses a unique set of challenges for golf course maintenance. Rain and wind erosion are the biggest contributors to bunker deterioration. The rain tends to wash sand from the sides of the bunkers to the bottom, while the constant coastal winds—especially the prevailing north wind during the summer—can shift sand from one area to another, sometimes even pushing it completely out of the bunker. In some cases, these strong winds have caused the bunker edges to erode, leading to turf overhanging the sand, which eventually drops into the bunker.

Additionally, without regular upkeep, weeds begin to establish themselves in the bunker sand, making the conditions less than ideal for both golfers and groundskeepers alike.

A New Chapter in Bunker Reconditioning

To address these challenges, our team kicked off a major bunker reconditioning project in December of 2024. This is a continuation of efforts we’ve started in previous winters, but with significantly more progress this time around. We even worked with the one of the original architects of the course, Greg Muirhead of Rees Jones Design Inc to get our bunkers back to where they need to be. Our goal is to ensure that every bunker at FGL is visually appealing, highly playable, and easy to maintain. While we’ve made substantial headway, we’ve only just reached the 13th hole, and we’re eager to complete the entire project before the golf season begins in the spring.

What’s Involved in Our Bunker Reconditioning Process?

Our bunker reconditioning process is designed to address both the aesthetic and functional aspects of the bunkers. The first step is to establish a new, clean edge for each bunker. We mark this new boundary with paint and remove the grass between the sand and the fresh edge. Once the edges are set, we move on to removing any weeds from the sand, giving us a fresh foundation to work with.

From there, we redistribute the sand. Areas with a surplus are moved to the edges, and we use a power rake to smooth everything out for an even finish. This simple but physically demanding process can take anywhere from a couple of hours to several days per bunker, depending on its size and the extent of the erosion.

What’s Next for Sandpine’s Bunkers?

As we continue working, we’ll keep tackling the effects of rain and wind. We’re aware that there may be occasional gaps in bunker conditioning as we progress, but rest assured, our team is committed to finishing this important project before the season begins. Once completed, the bunkers will be in top shape, requiring less off-season work and ensuring better consistency and less weed encroachment.
